I have teacher certifications for Generalist 4-8, Physical Education EC-12 and Special Education EC-12. After leaving the coorporate world in Store Development I had the pleasure of teaching 8th grade math for 4 years, coaching basketball, volleyball, track and soccer for 3 years, and doing the Adaptive P.E. class for 3 years. During that time I also tutored after school 8th grade math and did the math tutoring program for 7th and 9th grade athletes. From experience I have seen the difference that one on one help can do for a student soley, because of lack of distraction as well as the ability for a teacher and student to converse about the student's thought process. I believe that anything you can get a student to physically do or say in an out of the box scenario will help him/her remember how and when to use math functions. The fun makes an additional memory to connect the learning to. Once a student understands a concept, I also believe it is important to practice that skill repetitively to keep it in the long term memory. There is often not time in the classroom to do this, and the pendulumn has swung away from this philosophy (though there is reasearched based proof that repetition is still vital to an education). If your child is having issues in the classroom or on the court please be aware that sometimes just getting them in an environment where they are not afraid to make a mistake, and are not driven to rebel for status or pride (such as away from fellow students and caregivers)can make all the difference in their learning. Hobbies
I am a major outdoors person. I love to hike, rock climb, mountain bike (or in TX hill bike :) ), camp, go to the park with my son and dogs, and kayak. The outdoors is not all. I love to dance. Yes I am a major "So You Think You Can Dance" dork. My husband even surprised me with tickets to go see the top 10 performance in Grand Prairie. It is also hard for me to resist a basketball court and sand volleyball. For down time I also love movie watching and a good suspense mystery read. Last but not least, I have always loved to help challenge and see people surpass that challenge. The feeling of overcoming something that once seemed so unlikely is such a grand feeling; I love helping others get to experience that feeling!
